What Is Distributed Solar?

Rooftop and community solar ("distributed") solar projects are 5 megawatts or less, and typically take up less than 35 acres of space. Projects are installed on homes, businesses, and small parcels of land. These projects generate power close to where there is demand, and deliver direct utility bill savings for the households, businesses, and communities they serve.

In New York, distributed solar makes up 93% of all solar deployed in the State. Of the State's clean energy goals, distributed solar is the only one that has been met. The State achieved its 6 gigawatt goal for distributed solar over a year ahead of schedule (2024) and millions of dollars under budget.

The ASAP Act

The Accelerate Solar for Affordable Power (ASAP) Act is state legislation that would:

  1.  Raise New York's distributed solar goal to 20 gigawatts by 2035

  2.  Implement interconnection reforms to drive down solar project costs and connect new resources to the grid efficiently

  3.  Continue the State's most successful clean energy program, NY-Sun

This legislation allows New York to scale-up its most successful clean energy resource without fiscal strain on ratepayers or the state budget. The distributed solar and storage industry would be able to function economically without subsidy in the long-term, and drive down energy costs- ASAP!

This is a critical moment for change

Over the past year, the distributed solar industry has faced hostility from the federal government and State government backsliding. Hundreds of companies and thousands of workers are looking to New York State for certainty and support. Millions of ratepayers across the State are simultaneously looking towards the State for relief on the growing cost of energy

The ASAP Act is a no-regrets way to drive New York forward, addressing the core issue of energy affordability and doubling down on the State's most successful clean energy resource.

The State must act ASAP to secure affordable, reliable, and clean energy for New Yorkers!
